Forget tracking down a good dog groomer, a pet store, a kennel, and a place to leave your dog during the day -- it's all at Pete & Mac's, a resort/spa/playground for dogs. If the guilt over leaving the dog alone all day (or replacement costs for gnawed furniture) have you wondering what to do, Pete & Mac's offers doggie daycare. Supervised by dog trainers or veterinary technicians, the pups are free to romp both inside (a television, toys, and a plastic slide) and outside (a kiddie pool, shade trees, and room to run). Want proof your pooch had a good time? You can buy a video. For canine birthdays, the staff throws parties complete with a cake from the Three Dog Bakery; for Halloween, the dogs get their pictures taken in costume and go home with a goodie bag. "For Father's Day, every dog made their father a tie -- with a paw print," says manager Kristy Robbins, without so much as a giggle. Pete & Mac's also boards dogs, and runs have heated floors and dog beds. Ten area vets are part-owners, and they have a strong influence on day-to-day operations and health protocol, Robbins says. "We want to be a place where the dogs can be groomed, boarded, and have interactive play -- not be stuck in a cage all day," she says. Grooming options include dog massage by a trained massage therapist and a six-step procedure that removes the dog's shedding coat. Pete & Mac's has become so popular in the year it's been open that plans are in the works for another one in Lee's Summit and one in Phoenix.
And it's not just for dogs. A cat room has windows and an aviary.
