Best Place to Watch a Soccer Game

The Red Lyon Tavern

In Lawrence, the best place to watch some football action — not the American kind, thanks — isn't a sports bar at all. As owner Jerry Neverve explains, the Red Lyon Tavern is "just a neighborhood joint" where you never have to shout over a band. Free popcorn's always available, and sometimes a small dog is sprawled at the foot of the bar. The pup can have a harder time sleeping, though, when the TV's tuned to soccer. During soccer season — and especially when there's a World Cup up for grabs — the Red Lyon becomes the city's unofficial watch party. Neverve has always loved soccer, and, ever since he opened the bar in 1993, other soccer fans, including a lot of international students rooting for their home teams, have flocked there. Good thing he stocks a lot of imported beer.
