Take Five

Listening to Take Five is like spending a Sunday afternoon at a sound museum. Robert Moore, 89.3's music director, serves as curator -- and he has an innovative touch, eschewing categorization in favor of juxtaposition. Moore might start with a seldom-played number from the Beach Boys' brief foray into psychedelia and wind up with a multisong tribute to saxophonist Bobby Watson. Every few weeks, he unwraps some new CDs and exposes Kansas Citians to some cutting-edge sounds -- the gypsy punk of Gogol Bordello or the Brit-pop sensation Coldplay or the psycho country-western melange of Sixteen Horsepower. Even his DJ persona reinforces the aural museum theme -- no hype, just straight talk in a smooth tone, like a polite docent leading you through a collection of masterpieces.
