It might be humbling to admit that one of the top tourist draws to your town is a furniture store -- and not even a homegrown one, at that -- but there's no denying that since Nebraska Furniture Mart opened this summer, it's been drawing eager bargain hunters from places near and far. The good news for those shoppers: They'll find a massive, artfully designed marketplace that encourages browsing and hands-on exploration. (Go ahead, stretch out on that leather couch!) And for us locals, well, Kansas City, Kansas, has been in need of that kind of economic boost for a long time. And if you're wondering if a retail giant like NFM thinks much about your average shoppin' Joe, consider this: During the store's opening week, we were part of the throng that swamped the place, leading to long wait times for those of us picking up our items. Imagine our surprise when we recently received a $20 gift certificate from the store, just as a way to apologize for the logistical nightmare of those initial days. We can hardly wait to spend it.
