Best Reason for Royals Fans to Have Hope

Alex Gordon

The Royals selected Alex Gordon, a University of Nebraska third baseman, with the second pick in the 2005 draft. A hitting machine, Gordon led his college team in runs, hits, home runs, walks and slugging percentage. He continued the offensive fury as a Royals minor leaguer. Assigned to Double-A Wichita, Gordon was named Texas League Player of the Year and joined 2004 first-round pick Billy Butler to form a tandem of Batman and, well, Batman. Gordon is the brighter star of the two, mainly because he can catch and throw. Gordon seems likely to become the Royals' best player the moment he arrives at Kauffman Stadium. He's already found a place in memorabilia lore. An Alex Gordon baseball card, mistakenly included in some Topps sets, sells for as much as $2,500.
