Best Reason to Go to Lawrence 

Downtown

When the Riverfront Mall was erected near downtown Lawrence in the early '90s, some people claimed it would sap the historic area of all its business. A decade later, it is the mall that is all but dead, and downtown couldn't be stronger. Great restaurants, hip clothing stores, eclectic shops, and a comfortable balance between locally owned and name-brand stores make the five-block area this university town's place to go. --JN
