Gregg/Klice Recreation Center
No songs have been written about 17th Terrace and Vine, probably because practicality doesn't often inspire music. But the Gregg/Klice Recreation Center, which has a pool, a sauna, a hot tub, a basketball court, a fitness room and a computer lab, is an unsung but essential piece of the 18th and Vine corridor. It's populated by helpful and friendly people, including Anthony Parks, the program director whom kids call "Mr. Parks and Recreation." The pool is in sight of the hot tub, so parents can relax while watching their kids play with inflatable toys, and visitors can see the whole scene through a huge window in the entryway (which is sort of reminiscent of a zoo polar bear exhibit, but not in a bad way). A display of Polaroid pictures celebrates the center's senior members -- people who, if asked, might remember when they were doing something more titillating than playing gin rummy at 18th and Vine.
