Perhaps the most ubiquitous of all post-breakup confidence-boosting anthems, Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" clearly taps into something larger than us all. It's something that, from the standpoint of the nonbreakup-afflicted, seems truly awful; from the perspective of the recently dumped, it's oddly reassuring. How to bridge the gap among listeners? This question was brilliantly answered by one Late Night Theatre performer in a voluptuous blond Muppet costume who, during Le Fou Frog's Bastille Day celebration, danced to every different remix of the song and every different cover spliced together, the sound of tape rewinding between them making the transitions as obvious as possible. This performance ended up being more about the song's ubiquity than about the song itself. But hey, if what you needed that particular night was to assert that you would neither crumble nor lay down and die, that was definitely an option. Because really, who among us has never needed to dance to that tune?
