Best Restaurant to Impress Square Future In-Laws

The Governor's Meeting House

There are certain places one just doesn't take uptight, conservative in-laws-to-be: Johnny Dare's, the Shady Lady Lounge and Hooters, to name three. For a quiet, tasteful evening that reflects well on your more sensible, dignified side, there's the Governor's Meeting House, a 154-year-old farmhouse in Shawnee that restaurateurs Mark and Mary Mollentine have turned into a modestly appointed dining room that focuses on formal service and delicious food. Back in 1854, it was the residence and headquarters of territorial governor Andrew Reeder. (Now there's an icebreaker!) Chef Mark Mollentine uses regional ingredients to create fantastic soups, salads and entrées, such as roasted salmon and a flat-iron steak with chili pepper au jus. The ambience is unhurried, unpretentious and comforting, which is exactly the soothing atmosphere one wants when dropping a potential emotional bombshell like an unexpected pregnancy, an unplanned bankruptcy or that silly little bigamy problem. By the time the chocolate truffle cake is served, the wedding will be back on again.
