Too many of the Royals' between-innings diversions rely on computer animation. Watching anthropomorphic condiments circle the bases and a baseball hop among caps three-card-monte style, one question comes to mind: Where's the heart? The dance-off, in which two randomly chosen (but usually young) participants boogie to some disco relic or modern club smash, provides real flesh-and-blood characters to root for. The choreography can be creative, such as when a young girl laid flat on her belly in a failed attempt to execute the worm, thus inventing the "playing possum." And the promo-product prizes can inspire amusing reactions as well, such as the remastered Fleetwood Mac disc that provoked a disappointed blond teen to stick out her tongue in disgust.
