Escapist Skateboarding

We like Escapist Skateboarding because it has the essentials: a wall stacked with a hundred or so candy-colored decks; a huge selection of shoes, hats and gear; and the latest issue of Thrasher. Above and beyond that, Escapist has a high-flying team of riders and attracts the biggest names on the sponsored-skater set. When there's no answer on Escapist's phone, you can hear co-owner Adrian Frost's entertaining answering-machine messages. In a recent spiel, Frost railed against the latest trend in skateboard merch: the color pink. Barry Road store manager Spencer Benavides confirms: "First they [our young customers] talk about Bam," he says, referring to skater Bam Margera, ubiquitous on MTV. "Then they ask for black and pink." Kids these days.
