The citywide smoking ban instituted last year forced bars in Kansas City, Missouri, to get proactive about attracting nicotine enthusiasts who may no longer puff inside an establishment, no matter how right a cigarette tastes with a beer. The Foundry always had an ample patio overlooking the most active stretch of Westport Road, but the vaguely retro club stepped things up after the law changed, providing a roof over most of the outdoor area and enough heat lamps to make a December night feel downright tropical. On milder evenings, smokers and their friends may also opt for one of the uncovered outdoor tables and look up through the smoke at the starry night sky.
