When Dick's Sporting Goods bought Galyan's at Town Center this year, adding an eighth metro location (others are in Merriam, Olathe, Independence, midtown, Lee's Summit, Zona Rosa and Ward Parkway), it proved it could hawk goods to both indoor and outdoor enthusiasts. The store is the size of a sports arena. But the details are what make Dick's impressive. It carries outfield necessities such as Big League Chew and pocket-sized packs of sunflower seeds. It has high-end felt gaming tables, and it carries Poker for Dummies. It stocks rows of inexpensive sunscreen near its wakeboards and "Bowl to Win" towels alongside its bowling balls. There's even an air-hockey table with a ready supply of pucks waiting to entertain people who are just shopping.
