Joe Posnanski, "Even now Williams wrestles with his decision"
Other than the Royals' turnaround, the area sports story of 2003 was undoubtedly Roy Williams' decision to ditch the University of Kansas basketball program for a post at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina. Naturally, KU fans infuriated by the move were pushed to full-on insanity by a knee-jerk local media that covered the story with all the subtlety of a flamethrower (see "Best Predictable Wet Blanket"). Fortunately, Kansas City Star writer Joe Posnanski added some professionalism to the mix, demonstrating in one story why the Associated Press Sports Editors named him the country's best columnist earlier this year. "Here's what bothers Roy Williams more than anything," Posnanski wrote. "People already forget the good times. Forget them? They burn the good times. Roy Williams recites the resume like the Pledge of Allegiance: Four hundred wins. Nine conference championships. Four Final Fours. Highest graduation rate of any of the Final Four teams the last two years.... And now, many call him a deserter."
