Best Sports Talk Show Host

John Renshaw

Raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, John "The Freak" Renshaw speaks with a distinct twang. More than a Southern accent, though, separates Renshaw from Kansas City's sports-talking horde. His voice is nasal and high-pitched, a little womanly. Listening to Renshaw's show weekdays from 6 to 9 a.m. is like tuning in public radio and hearing humorist David Sedaris break down the next Chiefs opponent. And Renshaw's style is as unique as his voice. Whereas most sports talkers run their subjects into the ground, then dig them up with a backhoe, Renshaw works from a stream of consciousness, digressing from digressions. In one segment, he touched on foreign-language films, Ali G., the phenomenon of televised poker, substitute teachers and getting fired from Hardee's. A jogger, Renshaw gets away from spectator sports from time to time -- it's sometimes refreshing to hear a guy talk about the run he took instead of the faults he finds with the prevent defense.
