Close readers of the
Star know that, to our ever-prudent hometown daily, the charge "all the news that's fit to print" excludes even the tamest of swear words. In fact, we've heard some hilarious stories from frustrated
Star reporters about their attempts to get colorful quotes in the paper, only to see a cursory curse word replaced with the newspaper's profanity fix-all,
gosh. The most ridiculous example in recent history occurred on February 23, when the
Star quoted a sarcastic University of Missouri basketball Coach Quin Snyder after his team's loss to the University of Colorado: "CE(Gosh),' Snyder said. CEOf course I'm responsible. Why don't you come to our practices.'" Now, not only did the newspaper dilute the mystery swear word, leaving readers to wonder what exactly Snyder had said (Damn? Shit? Fuck? Cockwrench?), but it actually separated the "gosh" from the rest of the quote. Pretty (goshing) stupid, if you ask us.
