We're all for patriotism. House flags, car flags, Stars-and-Stripes pins, Stars-and-Stripes tattoos -- as far as we're concerned, there's no yard longer than the long yard of good ol' fashioned jingoism. But we must admit we were a bit thrown by the
Star's "Faces of Freedom" column during the War in Iraq, Part 1 (that is, before George W. Bush's premature victory speech). Each day, the
Star recognized soldiers from the Kansas City area who were fighting abroad. So far, so good. But we were a bit puzzled by the entry for April 23, in which the
Star celebrated a U.S. pilot by noting that his father "fought for Germany as a navigator on a bomber for the Luftwaffe, the German air force in World War II." So, like, a Nazi, then. Which is cool but maybe a little strange. After all: Nazi.
