Piper High School graduate Eric Stonestreet won an Emmy for his portrayal of Cameron, the gregarious stay-at-home dad on the ABC sitcom Modern Family. Stonestreet iced the award in the episode that revealed Cameron as a "classically trained Auguste clown." Cameron's clown habit mortifies his partner, Mitchell, until Cameron, in clown makeup and big shoes, cows a rude man at a gas station. The idea of making Cameron a clowning enthusiast came from Stonestreet's past. As a young man growing up in Wyandotte County, Stonestreet created a clown character named Fizbo. The Modern Family writers used the name Fizbo and have made other allusions to Stonestreet's background. Cameron is from "Tonganoxie, Missouri," a geographically imprecise place that Stonestreet, playing a gay former offensive lineman, brings to life with aplomb.
