Yes, other Thai restaurants in Kansas City are bigger, prettier and feature a wider array of dishes and more elaborate bars. But at Thai Orchid, the lure is simply the food. A tropical orchid may be seductively fragrant, but the Thai Orchid is perfumed with the intoxicating scent of fresh lemongrass, basil and spicy ginger, which heightens the anticipation for excellent soups, curries and rice dishes. Tucked away in a less-traveled section of downtown Mission, this little restaurant is often overlooked, but its fans have known exactly where to go for the last 18 years. They rave about signature dishes such as Ba Mee Krob and Lard Nah, as well as novelty items that might not be completely authentic — a zucchini twister, anyone? — but are tasty enough to share before focusing on entrées that can be as visually appealing as works of art.

This has got to be a joke. I stopped ordering from this place long ago, after the 3rd time I ordered food to go, I was called back by the restaurant to be told that something I ordered was unavailable. (One time it was the mee krob they were out of. Another time it was the BBQ chicken. How does a restaurant run out of chicken??? Particularly when it's located across the street from the grocery store! Ridiculous.) It's only a 5 minute drive from my house, but I'd rather take the extra 10 minutes to get to Lulu's downtown. Besides, there's no one ever AT Thai Orchid, which is scary in and of itself. I honestly don't know how they've stayed open all these years.
