The little neighborhood bar called Pockets will never be mistaken for a hot new nightspot. Its regulars skew toward the retired, and it serves only popcorn and lots of double vodkas. But it holds an amazing discovery for fans of
New York Times caricaturist Al Hirschfeld. Above the bar is a large mural that Pockets' owner Frank Kavorinos says was painted by Hirschfeld. Painted on glass in full color and lit from behind, a swarm of theater legends sit convivially around a bar -- there's Marlon Brando on the lower left, Carol Channing at lower right, and, beaming their famous mugs throughout, Vivian Leigh, Judy Garland and Marlene Deitrich. Two smaller murals are an added bonus in the same bar-cum-Hirshchfeld gallery.
