The Disabled American Veterans Thrift Store in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, had its grand opening in November 2005. Four times the size of its previous location on Minnesota Avenue, the store is still not as large as some other thrifts. But what it lacks in selection, the DAV makes up for in organization. In the women's section, for instance, a shopper is likely to find all the denim overalls hanging together. Sewing materials have their own room, and even the sporting-goods section (a riot of rusty golf clubs at most secondhand stores) shows signs of order. On a recent visit, we considered a $70 iMac before spending 70 cents on two audiocassettes: Paul Westerberg's 14 Songs and a tape marked "Granddad's Funeral." In purchasing the latter, we thought we were getting a visitation mix tape. Alas, the service itself had been preserved on Memorex. In any case, rest in peace, Charlie.
