Everyone has seen the mannequins in front of Dottie Mae's on Wornall. Sometimes dressed in Chiefs or Royals gear but currently clad in oranges and blacks, they are a beacon to the wonderful wackiness that lies within the store. The selection is extensive, ranging from sparsely studded tiaras to elaborate, Queen Elizabeth-worthy ones that are popular with brides. The wigs are impressive, too, with variously colored afros, bobs, and braids. "When you change your hair, you change your whole personality for a party," proclaims co-owner Dorothymae Groves. Among the rooms of vintage clothing and accessories is the surreal and somewhat creepy mannequin room, which is filled with about 200 bodies. Available for rent or for sale, they've been popular at parties and have probably made the KC social scene enough to have been documented by Laura Hockaday.
