Jerry Smith Park

Biologists and volunteers have spent 12 years restoring the remnant prairie discovered inside Jerry Smith Park, using KCP&L-donated equipment to clear the land of woody trees. The dreaded stalks of sericea lespedeza, an invasive plant, needed to be poisoned, while controlled burns helped other native plants and the eared false foxglove find their footing. Finally, in June, a hiking path opened inside the park, providing nature lovers with the opportunity to appreciate the effort that went into the prairie, the only one of its kind within the city limits of Kansas City, Missouri.
