Doing a good public-affairs TV show isn't easy. Kansas City Public Television's Ruckus, hosted by helmet-headed Mike Shanin, might be more aptly named Comatose. In contrast, Nick Haines, host of KCPT's Week in Review, manages the task of moderating a roundtable with aplomb. The red-haired Welshman is enthusiastic and knowledgeable, making his show a must-see for public-policy nerds. Haines brings the same passion to the Week in Review set that he brought to the Kansas Statehouse, which he covered as a radio reporter. "The skills that made him a good reporter make him an even better host," says KMBC Channel 9's Kris Ketz, an occasional Week in Review panelist. Besides, it's just cool to listen to a guy with a British accent talk about soccer fields in Johnson County.
