Best Unfortunately Named Festival

Kanrocksas

Concert promoter Chris Fritz had wanted to hold a music festival at the Kansas Speedway ever since it opened a decade ago. This year, he finally got his wish. Along with fellow organizers Bill Brandmeyer and Josh Hunt, Fritz assembled a first-rate festival lineup, featuring Eminem, Muse, Flaming Lips, the Black Keys and more. The event was far from perfect. A fan died on the campgrounds from an apparent overdose, and the 60,000 in attendance weren't enough to turn a profit. But the speedway proved to be an ideal facility. The staff was abundant and exceptionally friendly, and the performances were often spectacular. The founders say plans for next year are already under way. We'll call it a success for now, and we'll practice not cringing when we we have to call it Kanrocksas again next time.
