Other cities interact with their bodies of water for recreation and relaxation, but Kansas City largely ignores its resident river. And as anyone who has tried to bike the metro knows, KC cyclists also are frequently (and unfairly) treated as pests. But the recent closing of a gap in the Riverfront Heritage Trail provides a partial solution. The project is more than a decade in the making and aims eventually to connect downtown Kansas City, Missouri, to downtown Kansas City, Kansas. As of last January, cyclists can travel from the River Market to Berkley Riverfront Park via a scenic, safe and paved pathway. At sunset, the sun falls over the wide Missouri River — a glittery, surprising treat.•
