Best Use of Play in their Art
Schoolhouse Rock Live Too!
With Schoolhouse Rock Live Too! last April, set designer and director Ron Megee filled the Coterie space with every conceivable sliver of pop culture and filled his actors with an infectious amount of levity. Child psychologists (good ones, anyway) will tell you that play is for play's sake -- it doesn't have to have a beginning, middle or end, and to ask what it means kills the point. Members of the cast literally seemed to be playing a spontaneous game rather than performing a well-directed play; their free-form banter and camaraderie were spritzed with tons of unadulterated merriment. It was like an extended recess in a Colorform neighborhood.
