Previously the home to the meatcentric Sidney's Diner, the New Café Tandoor casts a wide culinary net with the many selections on its Indian-Pakistani menu. The meat dishes, mostly Pakistani, are great (we've heard), but we're going to come right out and declare that the New Café Tandoor serves up the best vegetarian food in the KC metro area. Of particular appeal: the mixed-vegetable korma, served spicy in rich yogurt sauce, and the aloo palak, a dish of fried potatoes and fresh spinach cooked with turmeric, cumin and other spices we aren't clever enough to decoct. And don't overlook the meatless offerings on the appetizer list; the vegetable pakora (spicy veggies battered and fried in vegetable oil) and the potato samosas are savory and as dangerously satisfying as the entrées themselves. One more suggestion for both vegetarians and omnivores: Don't leave without at least sharing an order of aloo paratha, the potato-filled Indian flatbread. It's the kind of simple indulgence that seals the deal.
