Ordering at Gates is a delicate matter. There is an army-caliber ordering bureaucracy in place, and the barbecue staff wants to move customers through it as quickly as possible. Everything has a precise name, because waiting for customers to haltingly describe what they want is not the Gates way. And any customer who doesn't know the name of the item he or she wants looks like an ass -- public humiliation appears to be an integral part of educating the uninitiated. So we thought we'd help out with a pointer on ordering one of the more bizarrely named selections. You want a turkey sandwich, on plain old sliced bread? Don't say that. It is incorrect. At Gates, there is no "sandwich." There is only meat on bun. SO ... in order to get that meat and sauce on bread instead of on a bun, you say "turkey on bun" -- meaning turkey sandwich -- and then tack on "on bread." That's turkey on bun on bread. Sure, you've named off two different kinds of bread when, in fact, you hope to get only one. Bun, in this case, doesn't mean bun. Trust us--you'll get exactly what you want. And could there be anything better than enjoying it with a strawberry soda? After all that, you deserve it.
