When Mike and Sherry Wallis chose the City Market to open the Wine Cellar four years ago, they brought exactly the right casually sophisticated and knowledgeable sensibility to the neighborhood. As the business grew, so did the scope of their vision, widening from wines to a full range of liquor and beer, fine cheese, free-range eggs and Shatto milk (major conveniences for residents of this grocery-free neighborhood). The sweet nucleus of the business is still wine, though, and the selection is geared toward loft residents planning the night's dinner menu rather than the serious collector with an unlimited budget. The average bottle costs $20 and has been carefully chosen by the Wallises based on their own years of tasting and studying. The store hosts weekly tastings, including a particularly busy affair during Saturday market days, which are great events for meeting the owners and other lovers of wine and cheese.
