The Wizards' Preki has had a rough couple of seasons, but he's proved he can persevere. He's 42 years old -- a relic in the world of professional soccer, which now offers multimillion-dollar sponsorships to teenage kickers. His stats in 2004 were dismal: two surgeries, zero goals. At the same time, though, he continued to hold the Major League Soccer all-time scoring title -- until the league changed its point system from tallying both goals and assists to counting only goals and he was promptly dethroned. In July, though, Preki told reporters he didn't care about that ego-driven crap. He had healed and was passing and scoring again, demonstrating the trait that he's built his career on and that pro sports teams need more of: selflessness.
