Boulevard built a marketplace for ambitious brewers. Now they're coming

CRAFT-BEER CRAWL -- KC HOP FEST

The best craft beer in the country is being poured Saturday in Waldo at Hop Fest 2011. This first-year event, at 207 West 74th Street (the parking lot east of the Well), features more than 200 beers from 50 breweries. If you're filling out your tasting card in advance, look for the Hoppy Wheat test beer (as well as another test sour) from Boulevard, the aged Gnarly Wine and Brown Shugga 2010 from Lagunitas Brewing Co., the oak-aged Dragon's Milk Ale from New Holland Brewing, and the Cuvee 3 from Southern Tier Brewing Co.

And it won't just be American beers that tempt your palate. Hop Fest also features Monk's Café, Troubadour Magma and La Chouffe from Belgium. "There's big beers, small beers and everything in between," says Cory Dannehl, sales manager with the Central States Beverage Co.

General-admission tickets for the 1–5 p.m. tasting are $30 (and include a take-home 4-ounce tasting glass). Special beers come out every half-hour. A limited number of VIP tickets ($50) will grant entrance to Hop Fest at noon, with the chance to try five exclusive beers. "I just want to make beer and do what I know how to do and send my son to college," he says.

"It's not the breweries that make the beer," Vaughn says, before climbing into the cab of his pickup on the hottest day of 2011 so far. "It's the brewers." And right now, this hometown brewer has to get back to his day job.
