Settled within a few blocks of Lake Lotawana is Canoe Club, a little slice of 1940s elegance. Made of reclaimed wood from old community lake houses, the cozy bar and restaurant is packed with relics from that bygone era. Wood lobster traps, canoes and fishing rods hang on the walls alongside vintage pictures of vacationers playing by the lake. In the back room, a fire roars as a bear's head looks down on the wood benches. The seafaring theme also applies to the menu, which is full of casual surf-and-turf fare, including daily menu specials such as oysters, fish tacos, and an incredibly cheap steak special (8 oz. filet, veggie, potato, salad and a glass of wine or beer for $16). A small stage sits front and center for bluegrass, jazz and acoustic rock musicians; in the summertime, the garage doors open, and dining goes alfresco.
