Try Brother
(Record Machine)

Full of delightful idiosyncracies, Kansas City indie-rock band Capybara infuses its debut album Try Brother with a sparkling aura of childlike wonder, mixing catchy syncopation and psychedelic '70s sunshine into pure, undistilled aural joy. Members Mark Harrison, Jared Horne, Darin Seal and Joel Wrolstad recorded Try Brother in an adobe hut in New Mexico, peppering the mix with hand claps, taps, clacks and jangling guitars. Channeling the quirky star power of experimental acts such as the Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective, Capybara seamlessly fuses fresh, playful instrumentation with vocals ranging from gloriously fragmented falsettos to Fleet Foxes-worthy folk harmonies. And with a musical whimsy that's catching the eye of tastemakers in high places — for starters, Spike Jonze and associates recently included standout track "The Wimp" on a mix for their Where the Wild Things Are blog — it's clear that Capybara's self-described "sunmusic" won't be under the radar for long.
