The Cascone family has been a major presence on this stretch of Fifth Street for more than half a century — ever since patriarch Sam Cascone and his wife, Vita, moved from a three-stool diner to a slightly bigger space in the City Market. Cascones Grill is by far the largest and most comfortable of the clans outposts. The menu hasnt changed much in five decades: fluffy pancakes, eggs cooked almost any style, Italian sausage, thick slabs of buttered Italian toast, spaghetti, cheeseburgers and hot beef sandwiches. Sam and Vitas children now run the place, with George and Frank in the kitchen. Unlike previous incarnations, this Cascones takes credit cards, but the fare here doesnt require a lot of cash. You can get eggs, bacon, toast and hash browns for less than $5, or a meatloaf dinner for $6. — Charles Ferruzza

Great place to grab breakfast or lunch. Good food, reasonable prices. $4.99 specials daily on the chalkboards. Can get so busy the servers are a little slow to refill coffee or soda, though. Friendly folks, with all the hustle and bustle of a deservedly popular place. Eat there. You'll like it.
