The Town of Kansas Pedestrian Bridge stretches 650 feet from the River Market over the bank of the Missouri River, with a long stairwell leading down to the Riverfront Heritage Trail and Berkley Park. Its pretty great! But according to the Kansas City Port Authority, the bridge is not yet fancy enough. Todays 4-7 p.m. groundbreaking party kicks off some upcoming fancifying enhancements, including a U-Rail track system in the stairwell so bicyclists can more easily transport their bikes from the northern terminus of the bridge to the trail below. The Port Authority is installing an EcoArt project on the bridge, which will produce wind and solar energy; its also extending and improving the entrance, and building a bio-retention garden under the bridge to collect storm water. The event begins with a holiday-lighting ceremony at the bridge at First Street and Main. The holiday party at First + Main Lofts (136 Main) is hosted by the Port Authority, Friends of the River, KEM Studios, Patti Banks Associates and Dimensional Innovations and includes appetizers, drinks and holiday music.
