Comicpolitans

Comic books are much cooler than they used to be. Once upon a time, readers were automatically classified as outcasts. Now, comics-loving hipsters scoff as superhero references on shows such as Lost fly over the heads of their peers. Enjoy these happy golden years of pop-culture superiority this weekend at Planet Comicon at the Overland Park International Trade Center (6800 West 115th Street).Guests include actors Kenny Baker (R2D2 from Star Wars) and Walter Koenig (Pavel Chekov from Star Trek) along with fan-favorite comic-book creators Kurt Busiek, David Finch and Eric Powell (and scores of other notables). Also look for locals Héctor Casanova, Travis Fox and Matt Fraction. Merchants from the four corners of fandom will also be on hand selling comics, toys and other collectibles. Doors are open 10 a.m to 5 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Weekend passes cost $15 for adults and $6 for kids ages 7-14. Kids younger than 7 get in free. For discounted advance tickets or more information, call 913-345-1069 or see Planet Comicon.
Sat., April 5, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun., April 6, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 2008
