Controversial Man

John Brown has a decidedly murky historical reputation. For the past 150 years, historians and pop-culture scribes have argued over his merits and flaws. Was he a heroic moralist, crusading against the cruel winds of slavery and trampling his less righteous opponents? Or was he a vengeful killer, allowing the hysteria of his times to drive his actions?Of course, the real answer may be that he was destined to be an opera subject. Decide for yourself at "A Time to Rewind, Relive and Remember," a free program devoted to the life of John Brown. It begins at 6:30 tonight at the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (2329 Flora). The event features University of Kansas history professor Jonathan Earle, who has written about Brown. Lyric Opera performers will stage a portion of an upcoming opera based on Brown's life. For more information, call 816-471-7344. Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church
