Coolest New Building
EPA Regional Headquarters
The new Environmental Protection Agency building at Fifth and Minnesota in Kansas City, Kan., is a 230,000-square-foot role model. It boasts one of the largest office-building atriums in the country, filling the building with natural light and helping regulate the temperature with specially tinted glass. Twelve ficus trees work as part of the air-cleaning system, motion sensors reduce energy use in unoccupied areas, and many of the building materials are recycled. This great example of turning a brownfield site into a green building makes us wonder if they're accepting applications. --MR
