Dark Night Returns

A recent hit single from British group the Wombats suggests, Let's dance to Joy Division/And celebrate the irony, but the Balanca's clientele already knows all about partying to a gloomy soundtrack. Recently, the weekly dance night Fallout, which covers the darkest shades of the musical spectrum, moved from Fridays to Thursdays. The repercussions shouldn't be apocalyptic — with the same talent in tow, Fallout loses only alliteration. "It's always a fun, good-sized gathering, with a mix of hipsters, freaks, punks, rivetheads and fun-loving alcoholics," explains Dustin Prewitt, who shares DJ duties with Creepygirl. The pair spins goth, synth-pop and aggro-industrial tunes old and new, spanning Ladytron, Marilyn Manson, Dead Can Dance and '80s dance music. Drink specials help grease the gears of choreography. There's no cover for Fallout Thursday at Balanca's (1809 Grand, 816-474-6369), which starts at 10 p.m.
