Design Observed

KC Design Week events examine multiple disciplines, including urban planning, and celebrate excellence in the fields of architectural, industrial, graphic and fashion design, as well as art and photography. Today's opening includes 5:30 p.m. remarks by former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes, who's also on a panel of celebrity judges reviewing the work of eight teams taking part in the "Design Challenge" from 1 to 4 p.m. Today's events take place at the new site of the KC chapter of the American Institute of Architects (1801 McGee). At 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at UMKC's Pierson Auditorium (5000 Holmes), Peter Park, director of planning and community development in Denver, offers his vision for urban renewal, with emphasis on walkability. Other events include a talk about Afghan textiles and the bimonthly Pecha Kucha discussion series at Crosstown Station (1522 McGee, 816-471-1522). For more information and a complete schedule, see kcdesignweek.org.
