October is a month of beloved traditions: carving pumpkins, celebrating German heritage, watching the leaves change color. Oh, and dressing the dog up in a humiliating costume and parading it through downtown Lawrence. Dogtoberfest
provides a venue for embarrassing dog costumes and so much more at South Park (12th Street and Massachusetts in Lawrence). This fundraiser for the Lawrence Community Center and the Lawrence Humane Society is a festival of all things canine. Pooches compete for titles including "Best Trick" and "Best Kisser"; vendors sell doggie goods and services; workshops cover such topics as agility and "dog yoga"; and the day culminates with a puppy parade up and down Massachusetts. Festivities run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the event is free to the public. See facebook.com/Dogtoberfest
for more info. Those who want to make it an all-out dog day can first drag Spot to Wyandotte County's inaugural Dog Jog
, which begins at 8 a.m. at Wyandotte High School (2501 Minnesota Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas). Canines are welcome but not needed to join in this community-wellness event, inspired by a 2009 statistic that identified Wyandotte as the least healthy county in Kansas. Registration is required.
