English Pig-Dogs

How in the hell could Eric Idle improve the 1975 classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail? Why, by adding leggy showgirls and songs called “He’s Not Dead Yet” and “The Song That Goes Like This,” along with “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” Idle’s optimistic ditty from the messianic 1979 Python pic, The Life of Brian. The Tony Award-winning musical, helmed by legendary director Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Tootsie) originally starred Tim Curry as King Arthur, David Hyde Pierce as Sir Robin and Hank Azaria doing multiple roles, including Sir Lancelot, Tim the Enchanter and the infamous Knight of Ni. None of those guys are in the 2007 touring cast, but that’s no matter because all the adventure, coconut clopping and killer bunnies remain. Spamalot premiered Tuesday and runs through August 19. Catch it at 8 tonight at the Music Hall (301 West 13th Street). Call 816-513-5000 or see theaterleague.com for tickets.
