Elisha Wampler has been been studying kung fu for 17 years. The 32-year-old third-degree black-sash master is now in his eighth year of teaching. His weekly family kung fu classes at City in Motion Dance Studio (3925 Main, 816-343-4185) focus on several forms, including weapons, rolls and falls, throwing, self-defense and meditation, funneled through the eyes of eight different animals — leopard, crane, tiger, dragon, praying mantis, snake, monkey and eagle. Now that's kid-friendly. "Family members can learn about themselves as individuals and, in turn, solidify their familial bonds," Wampler says. Classes are at noon Sundays; the cost is $50 per month for the first family member and $20 for each additional person (up to five). Sign up at eternalkungfu.com.
