Farm Fresh

These days, it's not just the gas pump that's sucking you dry but also the grocery store. One way to save a few bucks is to cut out the corporate middleman. So skip that trip to Hy-Vee and buy some produce from someone such as Joe Jennings. Nearly 80 years old, he's been growing food — without chemicals — for the better part of his life. And for the past decade, he's been doing it on an 8-acre farm tucked away on a winding road in Kansas City, Kansas. Jennings is just one of the local vendors setting up shop at the farmers market on the Kansas side of the metro. The brainchild of the Kansas City Food Circle, the new Merriam Organic Market continues to take root at 5740 Merriam Drive from 4 to 8 this evening. To preview the full festivities, check out merriamorganicmarket.org.
Tuesdays, 4-8 p.m., 2008
