Fiddle Ya Pink

Three days of stringed fun kicks off at 6 p.m. when Louisiana's Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys perform a free concert at the Lied Center (1600 Stewart in Lawrence). It's the opening event of the 30th annual Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships. Broussard and company perform contemporary zydeco and Creole classics. A potluck and jam session at the Americana Music Academy (1419 Massachusetts) follow the concert. Saturday's events include a full day of workshops at the academy; a free ice-cream social and jam session at 6 p.m. in South Park; and a barn-style dance, hosted by the Lawrence Barn Dance Association (yes, there is a Lawrence Barn Dance Association) at the Lawrence Community Building (11th Street and Vermont). Sunday is reserved for fiddling and picking contests beginning at noon at South Park. Workshops are $10, and the barn dance is $7 ($3 for students); all other events are free. For a complete schedule, call 785-841-6495 or see kansasfiddlingandpicking.org.
