Four undergrads are getting wider exposure tonight, too, at the anchor spot that arguably started the whole Crossroads District a couple of decades ago. KCAI giant Jim Leedy wanted to give students a place to exhibit. The basement space shows works by Emily Connell, Ben Harle, Hank Hafkemeyer and Will Preman. Upstairs at Leedy-Voulkos, the galleries include provocative work by Courtney Starrett in a show titled RubberMADE, along with two group exhibitions: the 2012 Annual Faculty Show (for the University of Kansas’ art department), and Vanguards and Visionaries. The latter spotlights a selection of KC’s art matriarchs and their younger successors: Philomene Bennett, Rita Blitt, Shea Gordon-Festoff, Janet Kuemmerlein, Jane Booth, Cheryl Toh, Karen McCoy and Jessica Kincaid.
