Origami dates back millennia, but it wasn't until the last century that enterprising minds and nimble fingers took paper folding light-years beyond decorative cranes and ornamental fans. As demonstrated in Vanessa Gould's documentary Between the Folds — screening at 2 p.m. today at the Kansas City Public Library's Plaza Branch (4801 Main) — origami is now practiced by artists, mathematicians and scientists who see in an uncut square of paper unlimited potential to understand, reinterpret and transform the world around us. Co-presented by the UMKC communication program, the 2009-10 Community Cinema Program previews films from the PBS series Independent Lens, followed by panel discussions that aim to unite communities toward addressing key social issues. Upcoming documentaries include Young@Heart, Mine, Dirt! The Movie, The Horse Boy and A Village Called Versailles.
