This restaurants owner Dick Hawk used to own a hotel at Lake of the Ozarks, and when he moved to Kansas City he brought the jazz band with him. Seven-night-a-week jazz is one of the attractions at this grill, which isnt as casual as the name suggests. The main barrel-vaulted dining room boasts black leatherette banquettes and semi-formal service. The fare here, created by chef Eddie Djilali, is supposedly American contemporary with a European twist. That means the menu has steak and spuds, pasta and risotto and English fish and chips. Theres something irresistibly appealing about this place, if only because it tries so hard to live up to its affectations as a 1940s jazz club steakhouse. With a European twist. — Charles Ferruzza
