Today's bold return of the Washington Generals to the Sprint Center (1407 Grand) marks the latest matchup of the sturdy, workmanlike basketball team and its somewhat more flamboyant and competent rival, the Harlem Globetrotters. While it's true that the Generals were never offered an animated Saturday-morning television series in which they all had superpowers, and while it's true that they never played a deadly game of basketball against a team of killer robots in a Gilligan's Island reunion movie, it is undeniable that the Washington Generals defeated the Harlem Globetrotters 100-99 on the glorious night of January 5, 1971, in Martin, Tennessee. That game ended an astonishing 2,495-game losing streak, but the glory was short-lived, and the Generals immediately embarked on a losing streak lasting until what The Pitch optimistically predicts will be tonight's historic twin victories over the Globetrotters. Tipoff is at 2 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rematch. Tickets range from $22 to $130, depending on how close to courtside you want to be for the Generals' return to 1971 form.
